2026 Shortlisted Titles

Compulsory Figures

John Barton |  Caitlin Press

From the jury:

John Barton’s Compulsory Figures illustrates that he is once again a consummate maker of poems. He uses all the resources of language, lineation, and metaphor to appeal to the imagination and the ear. While doing so, he ranges through myriad human experiences with grace and poignancy: marital discord, adultery and divorce, allusions to remote ancestry, childhood, even ecology.  Two poems especially capture with creative exactitude disparate human experiences: one gives us the feel of a young woman skating figures, the other of a sailor drowning.  The motif of love runs through the poems:  innocent girlhood love, filial love, elegiac love, and gay love. Barton’s words are best read aloud; they are precise, musical and unsentimental, fitting for a poet working at the peak of his craft.

Frayed Linens

Marilyn Bowering | Exile Editions

From the jury:

Marilyn Bowering’s Frayed Linens occupies a liminal landscape, a suspension of sorts—in dark, in wind, in water—that imbues this book with spacious attention and beautiful strangeness. The poems gorgeously roam through territory and time “in a country of the night,” their intelligence and compassion stedfast. The speaker engages with other poets, her own history, her losses and loves; within these varied subjects, a thread of wonder runs quietly rampant. Simultaneously grounded and in kaleidoscopic flight, Bowering’s work recognizes that “You must be deep in the earth/to find the water of a dream.”

encrypted

Arleen Paré | Caitlin Press

From the jury:

In encrypted, Arleen Paré documents a grandson’s vanishing into the world of digital gaming and a grandmother’s attempts to understand, alongside a backdrop of climate anxiety and a global pandemic. This cohesive collection interweaves the grandson’s addiction with the speaker’s honest reflections on her own life. She observes that “in this game of fast forward/I am a former dimension.” Yet she strives to reach her grandson in his fortified shelter. With a keen ear for music and linguistic precision, Paré makes poetic the language of video gaming and coding. encrypted is a vivid exploration of what makes our lives meaningful, of how one young man with avatar hands can “round out this world.” Throughout the narrative, Paré never succumbs to easy judgement but remains empathetic, questioning, loving, open to learning and longing for connection.
